Considering a Franchise?

Buying into a franchise can be a good investment. The name brand recognition has been established and if it’s a franchise that has been around and has several units in place then its success rate can also be tracked. When I looked into various franchises, I found that with the more popular ones, you need to have a substantial amount of what is called “liquid assets” to even be considered as a potential owner.

There are, however, franchises looking for quick growth and because of this are a little less expensive to get into. Even with these less expensive franchises, you’ll typically be paying more on the backend in higher monthly royalty fees.

Buying into a pre-existing franchise that someone has already owned and has decided to sell can have obvious benefits and be easier to obtain. You’re walking into a turnkey operation where its location and track record are already proven. And, if it has done well, the current owner is usually willing to help finance.

With either direction, there are questions that should be asked, such as what is the status of territory protection and will you be given first right on any franchise they want to put up in your immediate area? What are royalty fees and their percentage breakdown? If you’re buying the franchise from someone directly, what will the transfer fees be? Also, what kind of travel and corporate training expenses will you incur? These are just a few of the important questions you will want to get answered.

Buying into a franchise still does not guarantee success. Talk to people who already own one about the advantages and drawbacks. Ask for statistics on the growth and turnover rate of units. Also, find out about the number of lawsuits against the franchise. These things will all help you to determine whether buying into a franchise is the right direction for you.
